Our Weekly Market(Santhe)

Have you ever visited the weekly market or the 'Santhe' that they are locally called? If you have not done it yet, you can do it here, on this post. Santhes are small local vegetable markets arranged on the outskirts of the city/village. The vegetables here are fresh, cheap, and more organic than you think. I bet once you start visiting them, you would never want to buy the vegetables and fruits from the malls and supermarkets any more.

Santhe, Village Market

How are these markets different from the farmers market in other countries? These markets sell many other things apart from fruits and vegetables. The vegetables that are sold here are either locally grown or bought bulk from the main market of the city. For e.g. I am regular at these markets and I often purchase spinach and coriander from a lady who grows them.  I buy it mainly because they look sooo FRESH!!!

During the years of transferable job, whenever we relocated to a new city my father's first lookout was to find a place to get vegetable and fruits freshly. That tradition is instilled into me.  For me it's just 10 minute drive from my house and this distance makes me more certain to visit every week.
Being a regular visitor, I am acquainted with few lady sellers, and after a small chat they offer me extra discount on already discounted price.

Santhes are indispensable of many villagers in Indian Villages. A cluster of villages say 4 or 5 will have one market. For most of the villagers living nearby, this is also one stop groceries mart. That is why you see pulses, spices, flowers, utensils etc. being sold in the same platform as the vegetables. The sellers set up make shift tents or more fortunate ones will have a reserved place under the government designated large open shed with a roof.

Homemakers, husbands, restaurant workers, villagers and people from different walk of life flock the village markets to buy their daily needs
If you go at the end of the day everything is even more cheap, as most of the sellers would be calling it a day and packing their stuff. This is also the reason the Santhes are over crowded in the evening.
Here you could buy vegetables weight wise or heap wise. The sellers divide the vegetables into small heap, the usual price of which is merely 10 Indian Rupees.

Apart from my usual vegetables and fruits, I have bought many plants, clay pots from the sellers here which are seasonal. Hope you enjoyed the small tour of the market.

Wishing a happy year 2016

Wish all of readers a happy, prosperous and blessed year.. I am just back with couple of short vacations and down with severe cold and fever. What a way to start year!!!
I and my husband like to travel a lot and we make sure that we go and see new places every year. How I love to share my experiences of my visit, but sometimes do not get enough time or too lazy to post it. One of resolution for the year is to pen down my travel experience whether short or long. I am soon going to write about my two short trips which kids will enjoy for sure.

I am looking forward to January, the month where we plan to get the whole house painted.
The color scheme would remain same as present but I was thinking of getting one wall of living room painted in orange. Trying to imagine how it would be but not able to finalize on it.

In the month of February, I am planning on enrolling myself for the art classes. This was something that I always wanted to do but never gave it any serious thought. I am just curious to know whether I can paint or not -:))

While we were away for 10 days during the Christmas holidays, I had kept all my indoor plants outside for watering. My helper just bought few of them in yesterday and kept at one place on the terrace staircase. This make a cute scene, don't you think so?

Once again wishing you all a good year ahead. Hope it brings you lot of joy, your dreams and aspirations be fulfilled.

Dastkar Nature Bazaar 2015, Bengaluru

Hello there!!!
I had a fabulous time last weekend visiting the much awaited Dastkar Nature Bazaar 2015. I had been waiting for this from a long time and my wait was worth. For us, the people who hardly visit North Bangalore, it was bit difficult to locate Manpho Convention Center Grounds. We faced heavy traffic on our way, I thought my family would backlash me for this but I thank them sincerely for their once in a while devoted patience.
All stalls were colorful, a visual treat for your eyes, I had a hard time in deciding what to buy. At first we had a glance of all stalls to see what is in store.

The patchwork bags, accessories, sling bags, key chains.

Banana fiber products from Karnataka

Metal crafts from Chattisgarh. I fell in love with the tree, later when I came back for it, it was gone. So sad...

If it is craft exhibition how can we miss the famous Madhubani paintings from Bihar.

The lambani's and their jewelry from Karnataka. Later this woman gave demo of her working.

Pattachitras from Odisha.

Traditional games

Some miniatures..

 Beautiful baskets

Colorful small pouches, paper wind chimes. I am going to try doing this wind chime at home.

Leather works from Rajasthan.

 Embroidered bags from Gujarat

We bought couple of things which were expensive. After coming home in retrospection, we realized that we should have bought some lesser priced ones. It was bit disappointment compared to the craft melas in other cities like Jaipur, Delhi, Hyderabad. The stalls were less in number but definitely more when compared to other craft fairs in Chitrakala Parishat.
Hope you get to visit this bazaar which is till August 16th.

Weekend Drive to Lepakshi..

Bangalore has a lot of places around for sight seeing, picnic spots, most of them usually crowded on the weekends. We wanted some place which would definitely appeal, calm and a enjoyable long drive from home. So we set in to drive to Lepakshi, a beautiful temple situated near the Karnataka-Andhra border in our brand new Renault-Duster..
Lepakshi is situated about 120 KMS from B'lore. The route we took was an excellent one, there was hardly any traffic as it was Sunday. After the Kodikonda  Check post you have to drive approximately 4 KMs and take a left towards Lepakshi.
We left home early morning around 6:30 AM and reached Lepakshi around 9:30 AM breaking in between for a quick breakfast.
As I told you earlier since it was Sunday we were the first ones to arrive to the temple. All I was expecting was some crowd but I was surprised to see the place was devoid of any visitors.

The temple is built by the brothers Viranna and Virupanna, during Vijayanagar empire.  The main deity of the temple is Virupaksh, the main Gana of Lord Shiva and on the right side of the temple we have Devi Parvati. We could not have a good look inside the main shrine as the power was off as soon we entered the temple -:(.

Don't miss beautiful statues surrounding the temple, murals on the ceilings..

While coming back we saw the giant Nandi(situated less than a KM from the main temple) carved from a single granite stone.

This place is worth visiting and you can easily make it in a day.

A simple dessert

I caught on this habit of having sweet after lunch from my husband. Occasionally there would be some store bought sweets, or some home made sweets. When these are not there, this is my dessert.
Take a rusk, and apply any fruit jam(not mixed fruit) liberally all over it.
I am sure if you like jam, then you would love this too.

Pumpkins, too much of them

When God gives he gives in lots. This is so true in case of Pumpkins grown in our house. We never intended to sow the seed. Initially when it started growing we were not sure which creeper it was. I and my husband decided to wait and watch. But I had a doubt in my mind that it should be the sweet pumpkin. We didn't take out plant and just let it off to spread and grow in the neighbouring empty site. This is one advantage of having no next neighbours. Flowers started to bloom and after few days just thought to have a look. My god as many as 10 pumpkins were ready to be cut. Pumpkin not being one of our favourite, we take at least a month to finish off a single pumpkin. So P took them to his office and distributed among his colleagues and few were taken to relatives. Then after a few days a new problem started. A big rat started visiting our compound via this creeper and started creating a havoc. It started to dig a hole everywhere. Finally we decided enough was enough and to kill this creeper and we did it(I felt sad to do this). In the end we managed to get around 15-20 pumpkins. We had to dispose this off somehow. We were hoping that a nearby Hopcoms guy would take it but alas he refused to do so. We waited for a week and sold in the weekly Jigani market for rs 5 for a KG. It came to 48 Kg on a whole and instead got other vegetables for that money.
